Tooth Extractions
At Strawman Family Dentistry, we do everything it takes to repair and restore a damaged tooth. However, there are times a tooth sustains severe damage beyond repair, leaving extraction as the only viable option. The following are some reasons why you may need to have a tooth removed:
- Tooth Decay: Untreated tooth decay will continue progressing, eventually causing the tooth to be weak and brittle. Infection can also set in, causing intense pain, swelling, and redness. If we cannot repair the tooth using root canal therapy or other restorative treatments, extraction may be our only option.
- Periodontal Disease (irreversible gum disease): Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that, if left untreated, can damage the bone and tissues supporting the teeth, resulting in loose teeth. If a tooth’s support deteriorates beyond repair, we may have no choice but to extract it.
- Dental Trauma: If a tooth sustains damage due to accidental impact, our team will do everything possible to repair it and restore its health. However, trauma sometimes causes irreparable damage, leaving no viable solution other than an extraction.
- Overcrowding: Teeth overcrowding can result in crooked teeth and misaligned smiles. Selective tooth removal creates the space needed for the remaining teeth to shift into alignment and is often a component of an orthodontic treatment plan.
There are two main types of extractions: Simple and surgical. A simple extraction is required to remove a visible and easily accessible tooth. A surgical extraction is more involved. It is needed to remove a tooth that’s weak, fractured, or impacted, meaning it’s stuck in the jaw. After extracting a tooth, we may recommend replacing it with a dental bridge, partial denture, or dental implant to avoid further oral health concerns.
Bone Grafting
Restoring one or more missing teeth with dental implant restorations is the closest you’ll ever get to having healthy, natural teeth. However, implant surgery requires adequate bone mass for the procedure’s success. To prevent bone loss in an area after a tooth has been extracted, we may recommend a bone graft socket preservation procedure. That involves placing the bone graft right after removing a tooth and sometimes covering the graft with a collagen membrane. Your body will trigger new bone growth around the graft, making you a perfect candidate for a dental implant.
